WHAT DO THEY SAY ABOUT BUDAPEST? "PARIS OF EASTERN EUROPE"

"With its multifarious and often embittered history, incredible architecture and rich cultural heritage, Hungary's capital deserves its reputation as the "Paris of Eastern Europe". It has a complex identity, somewhere between Western luxury and simple traditions." (Lonely Planet) "A

HISTORICAL MEETING POINT OF EAST AND WEST

"As one of Europe's truly great capital cities, first time visitors are usually overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the city. Divided in two by the Danube, the numerous vantage points from the hilly Buda and Obuda offer spectacular views of a flat, busy, sprawling Pest on the river's eastern bank". (Talking Cities) "Much of downtown Budapest was built in a grand, ornate style during the height of the dual monarchy with Austria in the late 19th century. But the castle district (which recalls earlier Austrian domination), the wonderfully reviving Turkish baths (many built up during the 16th century Ottoman occupation), and the soviet-era socialist-realist architecture are signs of other influences in this eclectic city, which is a historical meeting point of East and West." BATHS AND COFFEEHOUSES

"I wanted to take the waters, as people used to call their visits to thermal baths, and Budapest was the obvious destination. The city sits on 123 hot springs, and people have been bathing in them at least since the 4th century B.C. After the Celts came the Romans, then the Magyars and the Turks." (Bath, Bath and Beyond in Budapest; KATHERINE ASHENBURG in The New York Times, October 10, 2004)

"A DYNAMIC AND INSPIRING CITY"

"Hungary is a country of innovators and original thinkers, its capital a dynamic and inspiring city. We have Hungary to thank for the fuel carburator, sound film holography, LPs, CD-ROMs, the discovery of vitamin C and the metallic eosin glaze, which gives brightly colored Zsolnay tiles the luster that makes Budapest's skyline glitter. The river Danube, which splits the city in two - conservative Buda and cosmopolitan Pest - and the Buda hills make this sophisticated capital one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is also a top destination for spas, which can be fun as well as therapeutic." (Conde Nast Traveler) "I had taken a poll among the international journalists while covering the battle of Fallujah in November. If you could go anywhere out of the middle-East that would be about halfway to the United States, where would it be, I asked them while the sounds of outgoing artillery shook our tent. Budapest. Budapest. Budapest. It was unanimous. (Hungary: Please, may I have some more? JACKIE SPINNER in Washington Post; March 20, 2005)
